Shemos 22:30
And you shall be people of holiness to Me; and flesh torn in the field you shall not eat; you shall throw it to the dog.
1“And you shall be people of holiness to Me.”1 Why does the verse use such a long phrase, and not simply say, “And you shall be holy”? The holy Zohar teaches on this verse that the expression “people of holiness” ranks above every other expression of holiness in the Torah, such as “a holy nation” and “a holy people.”2 We must also ask why the words “people of holiness” point to a higher holiness.
In shortWhy the long phrase “people of holiness” instead of “be holy,” and why does the Zohar rank it above every other expression of holiness?
2We may explain it as follows. The Magen Avraham, the classic commentary on the Shulchan Aruch, cites the Arizal on the closing words of the Asher Yatzar blessing, which is said after relieving oneself: “and Who does wondrously.”3 The neshamah, the higher soul, the Arizal explains, enjoys the spiritual side of food and the body enjoys its physical side, and so the food binds the two together. The Ramban on our verse teaches that a person's food sends a flow of influence into his body, and that this is why forbidden foods are forbidden: they make the soul thick and coarse.4 But from the Arizal's words we can learn even more: food has the power to affect even the neshamah. Tzaddikim have taught that a person may at times be holy to Hashem. Yet if, Heaven forbid, he stumbles even once with food that is not as it should be, he can ruin everything he attained in many years of avodas Hashem, the service of Hashem.5 That is why Chazal said: “Before you pray that words of Torah enter your insides, pray that delicacies not enter your insides.”6

In shortFood reaches even the soul, the Arizal teaches, so one lapse can undo years of service; first pray that delicacies not enter you.
3aThis is what the verse hints at in the words “And you shall be people of holiness to Me.” It teaches that the main path to holiness runs through human things, such as eating, drinking and the like. It is not as people tend to think, that holiness can be reached only through learning Torah and praying. That is the meaning of “people (anshei) of holiness”: you bring holiness into the anshei, the human part of a person.7 The Shulchan HaTahor writes that if on the night of holy Shabbos a person holds back and does not start eating as soon as delicious foods are set before him, those foods are turned into spiritual foods.8 In holding back he practices mesirus nefesh, the readiness to give one's life, and this heals his soul.
3bIn the same spirit, the holy Rebbe of Kotzk, zt"l, is quoted as saying on “And you shall be people of holiness to Me”: Mentshlich heilig zolt ir zein tzu mir, “You shall be humanly holy to Me.” This is what lies behind the Zohar's statement that “you shall be people of holiness to Me” is the very highest level. “A holy nation” was said about receiving the Torah and keeping its mitzvos. But here the verse says that they themselves shall be people of holiness: even while they are eating and drinking, and eating meat, they will feel Hashem's holiness in what they are doing. The next words of the verse hint at the same thing: “and flesh in the field … you shall not eat.” See to it that what you eat is eaten in holiness. Pay attention to what you are eating and to how you eat it, so that it is not like eating outside the bounds of holiness, [like the flesh “in the field,”] but all of it is done in holiness and purity.
In shortThe highest holiness, above Sinai's “holy nation,” comes in human things like eating; as the Rebbe of Kotzk said, “Be humanly holy to Me.”
4This lets us explain a verse later in the parshah: “And you shall serve Hashem your God, and He will bless your bread and your water, and I will remove illness from your midst.”9 A person who is privileged to serve Hashem even in his eating can reach the level of “and He will bless your bread”: his bread becomes a spiritual food that the soul enjoys, as the Arizal taught about the Asher Yatzar blessing. As a result he is also privileged to receive the blessing “and I will remove illness from your midst,” which means illnesses of both body and soul. All the illnesses of the body come through eating, as the Rambam explains.10 As for illness of the soul, the Ramban's words on forbidden foods, which we cited, make it clear that every food has a bearing on it. So by eating in holiness a person is privileged to receive Hashem's blessing, which removes every illness from him.11

In shortServing Hashem in eating makes bread food for the soul and brings the blessing “I will remove illness,” of body and soul alike.
5May Hashem grant that we be able to serve Him, at least in some measure, in physical matters too, and through this may we bring the redemption closer. Amen.
In shortThe Rebbe prays that we serve Hashem, at least in some measure, through physical things too, and so bring the redemption closer.
Takeaway
We tend to think that holiness belongs only to learning and prayer, but “people of holiness” asks us to be humanly holy, bringing Hashem into what we eat and how we eat it. Holding back for a moment before a tempting dish, and eating with care, turns our food into food for the soul. Then Hashem blesses our bread and our water and removes illness from our midst.
