Revealing Hashem's Glory: The Mishkan and the Passing of Tzaddikim

From the Torah ofRav Dovid Matisyohu Rabinowitzהרב דוד מתתיהו בן יחיאל יהושע רבינוביץProfile ›
Vayikra 9:6
Moshe said, “This is the thing that Hashem commanded you to do, and the glory of Hashem will appear to you.”
1“Moshe said, ‘This is the thing that Hashem commanded you to do, and the glory of Hashem will appear to you.’”1 But what is “the thing” Hashem commanded them to do? Moshe had told Aharon earlier, “Take for yourself a young calf for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering,”2 and had taught him the order of the offerings. Why, then, did he say once more, “This is the thing that Hashem commanded you to do”?

In shortMoshe had already taught Aharon the order of the offerings; what further “thing” did Hashem command them to do?
2The holy Ohr HaChaim takes up this question and cites the words of the Yalkut, which are also found in Toras Kohanim, the early Midrash on Vayikra:3 “‘This is the thing’: Moshe said to Israel, Remove that yetzer hara from your hearts, and let all of you be of one fear and one counsel in serving the Omnipresent … and if you do this, ‘the glory of Hashem will appear to you.’” Targum Yonasan ben Uziel, the Aramaic translation of the Torah, says something similar: “Remove the yetzer hara from your hearts.”4 But we need to understand where the wording of the verse hints at removing the yetzer hara from the heart.

  2. Targum Yonasan on Vayikra 9:6. ↩
In shortThe Midrash and the Targum read “This is the thing” as a call to remove the yetzer hara; where does the verse hint at it?
3On the verse “Vayehi, and it was, on the eighth day,” the Gemara says: “It was taught: On that day there was joy before the Holy One, blessed be He, like the day on which heaven and earth were created. It is written here, ‘And it was on the eighth day,’ and it is written there, ‘And it was evening and it was morning, one day.’”5 But what does the creation of heaven and earth have to do with the setting up of the Mishkan?

In shortThe Gemara likens the joy of the Mishkan's day to the joy of creation; what links the two?
4My holy great-grandfather, zy"a, in his holy sefer Divrei Binah, discusses the connection between the passing of Aharon's sons Nadav and Avihu and the setting up of the Mishkan,6 for there must surely be a deeper reason why both happened on the same day.
  1. Divrei Binah, 18b. ↩
In shortWhy did Nadav and Avihu pass away on the very day the Mishkan was set up?
5We can explain it this way. The purpose of creation, of all that “God created to make,”7 is to increase the glory of His Name. The heavens and all their hosts increase Hashem's glory in the world, as the verse says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.”8 Man, too, was created for this, as it says, “This people I formed for Myself; they shall declare My praise.”9 And every Jew is part of the glory of Heaven, because through him the Shechinah rests among Israel. As the Gemara says: “The Shechinah does not rest on fewer than two thousand and two myriads of Israel. If Israel numbered two thousand and two myriads less one, and this man did not engage in the mitzvah to be fruitful and multiply, has he not caused the Shechinah to depart from Israel? Others say: he causes the Shechinah to depart from Israel, as it says, ‘to be a God to you and to your offspring after you.’ When your offspring are after you, the Shechinah rests; when your offspring are not after you, upon whom will it rest? Upon the trees and the stones?”10 All this shows that heaven and earth were created entirely for Hashem's glory, and that it is our duty to increase the glory of Heaven.

In shortHeaven, earth and man were all created to increase Hashem's glory; every Jew is part of it, for through him the Shechinah rests on Israel.
6The Mishkan, too, was set up to increase the glory of Heaven in the world, as the verse says, “And they shall make Me a Mikdash, and I will dwell among them,” which Rashi explains: “They shall make for My Name a house of holiness.”11 The purpose of creation was the revelation of the glory of Heaven in the world, and this came about through His Shechinah resting in the Mishkan. That is why the joy on the day the Mishkan was set up was as great as on the day heaven and earth were created: on that day the dwelling of His Shechinah came into being, and this is the ultimate purpose of creation.

In shortThe Mishkan brought joy like creation's because the Shechinah's dwelling in it fulfilled creation's purpose, the revelation of Hashem's glory.
7aWe can find the reason Nadav and Avihu passed away on the very day the Mishkan was set up in what my holy great-grandfather wrote in his holy sefer Divrei Binah12 on the verse “And God went up from upon Avraham,”13 which Rashi explains: “We learn that the tzaddikim are the chariot of the Omnipresent.” He explained what it means that the tzaddikim are a chariot, a vehicle, for the Shechinah. In the Divine Chariot on high there are the faces of a lion and an eagle.14 In this world these are impure creatures, forbidden as food; but in the upper world they are the chayos, the holy creatures that carry the Throne, for in that upper world everything of this world is raised up. In just this way, the great tzaddikim repair everything in the world and raise it all to its root in holiness.

  3. Yechezkel 1:10. ↩
7bEvery desire in this world is like those creatures. Everything in this world has a very lofty root, but when it comes down into this world a person can use it improperly. The tzaddikim sift out the good in all things and raise them to their root in holiness, and that is why the tzaddikim are the chariot of the Omnipresent, blessed be He. His words show that this follows by a kal vachomer, an argument from the lesser to the greater: if those creatures are a chariot above, all the more so are the tzaddikim. They are the foundation of holiness, for they increase the glory of Heaven.
7cHe went on to explain that this is why Chazal compared the passing of tzaddikim to the setting of the sun,15 as in the verse “The sun rises and the sun sets.”16 Just as the sun begins to shine on the world again after it sets, so the tzaddikim, right after their passing, shine in this world and draw down mercy on Knesses Yisrael. This is the hint in the words “Men of kindness are gathered in”:17 even after they have been gathered in, they remain men of kindness, drawing great kindness and mercy down to the world. Those are his holy words. This means that the tzaddikim, who gave their lives for the glory of Heaven, are so holy that they can bestow on us kindness that is plain to see.

  3. Based on Yeshayahu 57:1. ↩
In shortTzaddikim are Hashem's chariot, raising the world to holiness, the Rebbe's great-grandfather taught; like the setting sun, after their passing they shine again with kindness.
8This explains why Nadav and Avihu passed away on the day the Mishkan was set up. As we have seen, the Mishkan was set up for the glory of Heaven, and the passing of tzaddikim likewise reveals the glory of Heaven.
In shortNadav and Avihu passed away on the Mishkan's day because both the Mishkan and the passing of tzaddikim reveal the glory of Heaven.
9This, then, is the meaning of the verse “This is the thing that Hashem commanded you to do, and the glory of Hashem will appear to you.” This itself is “the thing that Hashem commanded”: that through you, in all your deeds, the glory of Hashem should increase. That is “and the glory of Hashem will appear to you”: in everything you do, see to it that your only intent is the glory of His Name. And this is what Chazal meant by “Remove that yetzer hara from your hearts”: set aside every kind of calculation the yetzer hara suggests, which lead a person to do the mitzvos for his own benefit and pleasure. Instead, in every deed he should intend only the glory of Heaven.
In short“The thing” Hashem commanded is to increase His glory in all we do, removing the yetzer hara's self-serving calculations from every mitzvah.
10aMy holy great-grandfather of Biala, in his sefer on this parshah, explained the verse “And it was on the eighth day.”18 Chazal expounded that wherever the word vayehi, “and it was,” appears, it expresses distress, while wherever vehayah, “and it will be,” appears, it expresses joy.19 He explained it this way. Vayehi is in the past tense. When a person reflects on the past and makes a cheshbon hanefesh, a searching account of all his deeds, it leaves him distressed. He sees how little he has done in avodas Hashem, the service of Hashem, and for the glory of Heaven; in truth, he has hardly begun. But vehayah is in the future tense. When a person takes it upon himself to begin, from now on, to serve Hashem, he must do so with joy.

  2. Megillah 10b; Bereishis Rabbah 42:4. ↩
10bBuilding on his words, we may add this. Chazal say in that same passage that the word vayehi can express joy as well as distress.20 The hint is this: when a person reflects on his past deeds and takes stock of them, which is the vayehi of distress, he is moved to begin serving the Creator with fresh vigor, and so he brings joy to the upper worlds. That is why vayehi also expresses joy: the outcome of reflecting on his past is joy in the upper worlds.
  1. Megillah 10b. ↩
In shortReckoning with the past brings distress at how little we have done, but it spurs us to serve anew and so brings joy above.
11May Hashem help us, so that we are privileged to increase the glory of Heaven in the merit of our holy forefathers, zy"a, and through this to see the coming of Moshiach. Amen, may it be His will.
