Shabbos Assembly: Moshe Gathers Souls with Da'as

Shemos 35:1
Moshe assembled the entire congregation of Bnei Yisrael and said to them, “These are the things that Hashem commanded, to do them.”
1“Moshe assembled the entire congregation of Bnei Yisrael and said to them, ‘These are the things that Hashem commanded, to do them.’”1 The Yalkut Shimoni brings this teaching: “Our Rabbis, the masters of Aggadah, say: From the beginning of the Torah to its end there is no parshah that opens with Vayakhel, ‘he assembled,’ but this one alone. The Holy One, blessed be He, said: Make for yourself great assemblies and expound the laws of Shabbos before them in public.”2 Yet the entire Torah was also taught to an assembly, as the Gemara explains: “What was the order of teaching? … All the people came in, and Moshe taught them their portion.”3 Why, then, does this parshah in particular mention that it was said to an assembly?
- Shemos 35:1. ↩
- Yalkut Shimoni, Vayakhel §408. ↩
- Eruvin 54b. The Gemara there describes how Moshe taught the Oral Torah: first to Aharon, then to his sons, then to the elders, and then to all the people. ↩
In shortOnly this parshah opens with Vayakhel, for teaching Shabbos to assemblies; yet the whole Torah was taught to an assembly, so why stress it here?
2Rashi comments: “Vayakhel is a causative form: he does not gather people with his hands; rather, they gather at his word.”4 What is Rashi telling us that we did not know? Moshe Rabbeinu certainly could not have gathered all Israel, more than six hundred thousand people, with his hands!
- Rashi on Shemos 35:1. ↩
In shortRashi says Moshe gathered the people by his word, not with his hands; but what could that remark add?
3Notice, too, the verse's wording: “the entire congregation of Bnei Yisrael.” Why does it add the word adas, “congregation”? What would be missing if it said simply “all Bnei Yisrael”?
In shortThe verse could have said “all Bnei Yisrael,” so what does the word adas, “congregation,” add?
4My holy father and teacher, zt"l, explained the verse “These are the things that Hashem commanded, to do them” through a saying of Chazal: wherever the word eileh, “these,” appears, it sets aside what came before.5 The verse, he said, hints at the service of teshuvah, which means setting aside what one has already done and starting anew. Those are his holy words. But according to his words, how is the mitzvah of teshuvah connected with the mitzvah of the holy Shabbos, which this verse speaks of?
- Bereishis Rabbah 12:2; in standard editions 12:3. ↩
In shortThe Rebbe's father read eileh, which sets aside what came before, as a hint to teshuvah; but how is teshuvah tied to Shabbos?
5aWe can explain this by first citing my holy great-grandfather of Biala, zy"a, in his holy sefer Divrei Binah.6 He writes: “We say in the Ani Maamin, ‘I believe with complete faith that the prophecy of Moshe Rabbeinu, peace be upon him, was true, and that he was the father of the wise men and of the prophets who came after him.’7 Why do we mention that he was ‘the father of the wise men’? Surely what matters is that we believe in his prophecy: that he was the father of the prophets who came after him, and that his prophecy is truth from the mouth of the Holy One, blessed be He. Why must we add that he was the father of the wise men? That has nothing to do with the principles of faith. But we find in the Sifrei: ‘All the prophets prophesied with koh, “Thus says Hashem”; Moshe surpassed them, for he prophesied with zeh hadavar, “This is the thing.”’8 The idea is this. Moshe Rabbeinu's prophecy differed from that of all the other prophets. Through the words of their prophecy, the prophets instilled in Israel faith in the God of the world: that ‘there is none other besides Him,’9 and that in everything that happens in the world, all is Hashem's power. They taught, too, that Israel must recognize Hashem's goodness to it and serve Him with faith and wholeheartedness.
5b“But Moshe Rabbeinu's prophecy was on such a level that through ‘This is the Torah that Moshe placed before Bnei Yisrael,’10 Bnei Yisrael were privileged to attain true awareness, da'as. With their own wisdom and understanding they came to recognize and know that in all the affairs of the world, the life-force of Hashem's Godliness flows down and clothes itself in this world through the combinations of the letters of the Torah. They saw with their eyes and their minds that all the life flowing to the worlds comes through the holy Torah, which is the Names of Hashem. They needed no faith for this at all, for they saw it with their own understanding and wisdom, with true recognition, through the power of da'as that Moshe Rabbeinu bestowed on them. That is why we say that he was the father of the wise men and of the prophets: his prophecy was of the nature of wisdom, grasping a thing with the mind's eye. That is what zeh hadavar, ‘this is the thing,’ means, for one says ‘this is the thing’ of what one sees with one's own eyes. Moshe Rabbeinu was the da'as of all Israel, and he bestowed on them lofty wisdom and lofty da'as, so that they could see ‘eye to eye’11 the power of Hashem's Godliness that gives life to all the worlds …

5c“Shabbos too is of this nature: it is da'as, a reflection of the World to Come,12 where ‘the tzaddikim sit with their crowns on their heads and delight in the radiance of the Shechinah.’13” That is the gist of his words. Moshe Rabbeinu, then, instilled lofty da'as in Israel, so that the people understood and recognized by themselves that there is none other besides Him. This is zeh hadavar: they saw plainly that everything comes from Heaven. And this is why Moshe is called “the father of the wise men”: he instilled da'as and wisdom in Israel. Reaching so great a level of da'as, recognizing the power of Hashem's Godliness that gives life to all creation, is very hard. But there is one day, and Shabbos is its name, on which everyone can reach da'as, each at his own level.
In shortMoshe's “This is the thing” prophecy gave Israel da'as, seeing Hashem in everything with its own mind; on Shabbos every Jew can reach it.
6We may add that on Shabbos the light of da'as shines for Israel. The Gemara says: “It was taught: ‘… to know that I am Hashem Who sanctifies you.’ The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moshe: I have a good gift in My treasure house, and Shabbos is its name, and I wish to give it to Israel. Go and tell them.”14 Since Chazal learned this from the words “to know (lada'as) that I am Hashem,” it is clear that the power of Shabbos gives a person da'as to grasp “that I am Hashem Who sanctifies you.” In the same way, the Yerushalmi reports that Rebbi, R' Yehudah HaNasi, said: “I am astonished that they left out Chonen hada'as, the blessing for knowledge, on Shabbos. If there is no knowledge, how can there be prayer?” And likewise: “If there is no knowledge, how can there be havdalah?”15 In other words, the abundance of da'as that flows on Shabbos is one of the day's essentials. So it would have been fitting for Shabbos to have a fixed prayer for da'as, for that is the time best suited to it.
- Shabbos 10b; the verse is Shemos 31:13. ↩
- Yerushalmi Berachos 5:2. On the night after Shabbos, havdalah, the blessing that marks the end of Shabbos, is added within the weekday blessing for knowledge. ↩
In shortDa'as shines on Shabbos: the Gemara ties its gift to “to know that I am Hashem,” and Rebbi wonders that the prayer for knowledge is omitted.
7aDa'as leads a person to teshuvah, as the holy sefarim indicate: Shabbos, they say, is a time of teshuvah, for the letters of Shabbos (שבת) are the initials of Shabbos bo tashuv, “on Shabbos you shall return.”16 This is what Rebbi meant by “If there is no knowledge, how can there be havdalah?” Havdalah means distinguishing, and only a person who lacks da'as fails to tell darkness from light. Darkness looks to him like light, and so he comes to sin. As Chazal said, “A person does not commit a sin unless a spirit of folly has entered him.”17 But when a person has da'as, he comes to teshuvah of his own accord.
7bThe Rambam too shows that teshuvah depends on da'as. At the end of his laws of teshuvah he writes: “It is known and clear that the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, does not become bound up in a person's heart until he is constantly absorbed in it as he should be, and leaves everything in the world besides it, as He commanded, ‘with all your heart and with all your soul.’ One loves Hashem only through the knowledge with which he knows Him.”18 At first glance, what does da'as have to do with the laws of teshuvah? But as we have seen, the root of sin is a lack of da'as. So when a person grows in knowledge of his Maker, he is saved and guarded from sinning again, and that is the root of teshuvah. And since the light of da'as flows on Shabbos, Shabbos is a time of teshuvah. This makes good sense of my holy father's words: the verse “These are the things,” which speaks of the mitzvah of Shabbos, hints at teshuvah, as Chazal said, “Eileh sets aside what came before.” For, as we said, the da'as that flows on Shabbos makes it a time of teshuvah and of closeness to Hashem.
- Hilchos Teshuvah, ch. 10; the verse is Devarim 6:5. ↩
In shortSin comes from lacking da'as, so Shabbos, the day of da'as, is a day of teshuvah, as the Rebbe's father found in the Shabbos verse.
8This lets us explain the verse “Moshe assembled the entire congregation of Bnei Yisrael.” Moshe Rabbeinu, the father of the wise men, had, as we saw, a special power to light up the hearts of Israel with the light of da'as, the level of “This is the thing that Hashem commanded.”19 And “These are the things” (eileh hadevarim) is the same kind of expression as “This is the thing” (zeh hadavar). This power flowed into the hearts of Israel through Moshe Rabbeinu's words, and through him it is possible to reach this quality on the holy Shabbos. That is why the verse says “the entire congregation of Bnei Yisrael”: adas (עדת) has the same letters as da'as (דעת). Moshe instilled da'as in all Israel, above all on Shabbos, the time when da'as flows.

In short“These are the things” echoes Moshe's “This is the thing,” and adas spells da'as: Moshe instilled da'as in all Israel, especially on Shabbos.
9This is what Rashi meant: “He does not gather people with his hands; rather, they gather at his word.” What was meant here was not a gathering of bodies but, above all, a gathering of souls, in which Moshe Rabbeinu kindled the light of da'as and made it shine. For a person's speech carries the light of his soul. The Targum renders the verse “and man became a living soul” as “and it became in man a speaking spirit”:20 the living soul that Hashem breathed into man is the spirit that speaks from his mouth. So Rashi means that Moshe gathered the souls by the power of his speech, and through his speech he set their souls right with the light of da'as that he shone for them on the holy Shabbos. That is why assembly is mentioned only in this parshah: to teach us that only on Shabbos can a person attain da'as, for that is the time suited to instilling da'as in all Israel. Hashem therefore commanded Moshe to gather assemblies on Shabbos, since Shabbos is the right time for it. [Every sage and tzaddik must likewise gather assemblies of Israel, as the Yalkut Shimoni goes on to explain, for that is the time suited to lighting them up with the light of da'as.]
- Bereishis 2:7; Targum Onkelos there. ↩
In shortMoshe gathered souls “at his word,” kindling da'as through speech; assembly appears only with Shabbos, the time suited to da'as.
10Hashem willing, all of us will be privileged to attain this da'as in the days of Moshiach. As the Rambam writes, at that time “Israel will be great sages and will attain knowledge of their Creator as far as man is able, as it says, ‘For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea.’”21 The holy Shabbos is only a reflection of the World to Come. If we are privileged to attain da'as on Shabbos, how much more will we be privileged to know Hashem in the time to come. May Hashem grant that we soon be privileged to reach the day that is entirely Shabbos,22 in the time to come.
In shortThe Rebbe prays that we soon reach the day that is entirely Shabbos, when the da'as tasted each Shabbos will be ours in full.
Takeaway
Shabbos is not only a day of rest but a gift of da'as, a day on which every Jew, at his own level, can see for himself that there is none other besides Hashem. That clarity is also the root of teshuvah, since we sin only when darkness looks like light. When we gather on Shabbos to hear words of Torah, we open ourselves to the light Moshe kindled in the souls of Israel, and so prepare for the day that is entirely Shabbos.
