Tithing Your Time
A story ofRav Aryeh Leib Malinהרב אריה לייב בן אברהם משה מליןProfile ›
While learning in Grodno, Rav Leib and a close friend, Rav Dovid Lifshitz, who would become the Suvalker Rav and a rosh yeshiva at RIETS, went to Rav Shimon Shkop with a personal matter. They spoke at length and the conversation was fruitful. When it ended, the two young men apologized for taking time that Rav Shimon could have spent learning.
Rav Shimon answered with the words of Chazal, “Aser bishvil shetisasher,” tithe so that you will grow wealthy. He explained that the principle applies to spiritual wealth as well as money. A rosh yeshiva who gives time to his talmidim loses nothing and will see greater success in his own shiurim.
Those words later helped shape the way Rav Leib saw his own role.
