Burial in Lwow Before Shabbos

Shabbos & Yom Tov

A story ofRav Avrohom Chaim Schorrהרב אברהם חיים בן נפתלי צבי הירש שור

It is told that the Gaon, author of the Toras Chaim, passed away in Belz on the ninth of Teves. Before he passed away, he commanded as his last will and testament that the chevra kadisha summon the heads and gedolim of Belz to him. When they arrived, he ordered them to bury him in Lwow by the next day.

The dignitaries of Belz protested that this was not possible. Lwow was far away, and the tenth of Teves was erev Shabbos, so how could they possibly reach Lwow before Shabbos? He remained unmoved. He insisted that he wished to be buried in the great Beis HaChaim in Lwow, among the other great tzaddikim and rabbonim who lay there.

"Take a wagon and harness it with oxen," said the Toras Chaim. "The way is too narrow for horses, and I am certain that you will reach Lwow before chatzos." He himself wrote a letter to the heads of the community and the rabbonim of Lwow, saying that he wished to be buried among the princes of Torah, may their memory be a blessing.

And so it was. They reached Lwow before chatzos, and he was buried there, as recorded in the community's pinkas chevra kadisha.
