A Yeshua for Rav Meir Zev Katz
Tzedakah & chesedShabbos & Yom Tov
In 1935, Rav Meir Zev Katz hy"d had a young non-Jewish tenant who was angry with him and wanted to harm him. She went to the Hungarian authorities and claimed that Rav Meir Zev and his family spoke against the government, an offense that was then punishable by death. Rav Meir Zev and his wife were arrested, released on bail, and a court date was set. This account comes from a grandson, who notes that his mother and other family members witnessed it themselves.
At that time the Stropkover Rebbe was a guest for a few days at the home of Rav Meir Zev's brother. Rav Meir Zev went to him and asked for a yeshua. The Rebbe told him to go home and find out the exact name of the tenant and the name of her mother.
Rav Meir Zev returned to the Rebbe on Motzaei Shabbos with the names. Rav Avrohom Sholom asked a young cousin to bring the candles that had been lit in honor of Motzaei Shabbos, and he burned the paper on which her name was written. The next day the news spread that the tenant had died in her sleep. With no witness left, the case was dropped at once.
