Taxi Rides

A story ofRav Avrohom Yehoshua Heschelהרב אברהם יהושע בן יצחק מאיר העשיל

Whenever the Rebbe rode in a taxi, he always sat next to the driver, even though doing so might seem unfitting for a Rebbe. Most of the drivers were Jews, and his purpose in sitting beside them was to engage them in conversation, in the hope of influencing their religious observance.

There were many cab drivers whom he prevailed upon to start putting on tefillin. He himself purchased pairs of tefillin for drivers who promised that they would put them on daily, even if just for a few moments.
