At the Kever of the Pri Chodosh

Torah learning

A story ofRav Chaim Ibn Attarהרב חיים בן עטר

The Chida recalled a visit from his youth, when he had the privilege of accompanying the Ohr HaChaim and the talmidim of his yeshiva. It was the Rebbe's custom to take them to daven at the kevarim of tzaddikim in Yerushalayim.

At the matzeivah of the author of the Pri Chodosh, the Ohr HaChaim remained by himself for a quarter of an hour or longer. He stood praying at the kever, his lips moving, and the talmidim understood that he was begging forgiveness.

In his own sefer, Pri Toar, Rav Chaim disagrees with the Pri Chodosh and decides against him in places. He was asking pardon for that, and affirming that all he had done was purely for the sake of Heaven.
