The Supernatural Author

Torah learning

A story ofRav Chaim Palagi of Izmirהרב חיים בן יעקב פלאג'י

Chacham Chaim Palagi wrote and printed seforim in every area of Torah, from halacha to Midrash, Tanach and mussar. His first sefer was finished when he was only sixteen years old, and his last was completed a day before he passed away. For each sefer that he printed he held a seudas mitzvah, and he never sold them, but gave them as gifts to talmidei chachamim.

Some people thought that so great a gift for writing must be supernatural, and that he wrote with the help of divine Names. His son Avrohom, whose well-known photograph is often mistaken for his father's, testified, “My father's fear and awe of Heaven, and his wisdom, were far greater and stronger than any divine Name he could have used to write.”
