Leaving With the Same Goy

Shabbos & Yom Tov

A story ofRav Dovid Twerski of Tolnaהרב דוד בן מרדכי מטולנא

Once, one of the Tolna Rebbe's chassidim came to take his leave as soon as Shabbos was over. "What's the rush?" asked the Rebbe.

"The goy, the ba'al agola (wagon driver), is already waiting for me outside," the chassid hurried to explain.

"Miten zelbe goy gekimen miten zelben goy furstu a'heim," the Rebbe declared. His words held a double meaning: "You came with the same goy and you are leaving with the same goy." You came here with the same non-Jewish yetzer hora, and you are leaving unchanged.
