Miriam and the Wrath of Pharaoh
Children & shidduchim
Chazal teach that the Hebrew midwives of whom the Torah speaks were Yocheved and her daughter Miriam. Miriam was only five years old, yet she went with Yocheved to assist her.
She is the one called Puah. She gave the newborns wine and revived babies who seemed to be dead, and she lit up Yisroel before Hashem by teaching the women.
Miriam also stood before Pharaoh. She stuck up her nose at him and declared, “Woe to the man, to Pharaoh, when Hashem punishes him.” Pharaoh was filled with wrath and would have killed her, but Yocheved appeased him. “Will you pay attention to her?” she said. “She is only a child. She has no understanding.”
