Some time before Rav Yisroel Salanter moved to Germany in 1857, the Alter met with him. He asked what his own avodah and tafkid (mission) in this world should be.
Rav Yisroel answered with the words of Yeshayahu: to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the broken (Yeshayahu 57:15).
