Ima Shalom and the Judge

A story ofRabban Gamaliel IIרבן גמליאל דיבנה

Rabban Gamliel and his sister, Ima Shalom, were sharp in dealing with the growing local Christian population. It is told that they once made sport of a gentile judge in an inheritance case. Ima Shalom presented herself as a pretend claimant, and Rabban Gamliel gave the judge a bribe. At first the judge ruled in favor of the woman, but he soon cancelled the verdict and ruled in favor of Rabban Gamliel.

The account includes a phrase that recalls words in Matthew 5:17, and one possible reading of it is that Rabban Gamliel himself was the one who made the reference.
