His Last Shema

A story ofRebbe Salomon Henoch Rabinowiczרבי שלמה חנוך הכהן רבינוביץ

On 1 August 1942, German soldiers burst into the Rebbe's house in the Warsaw Ghetto to deport everyone inside to the Chelmno extermination camp. The Rebbe would not leave. He said, "I know you've come to kill me. I prefer to die here in my house and not in a car filled with poison gas."

He then began to say Shema Yisroel. He was shot in the head as he reached the final word, Echad (One). His family members were shot beside him.
