The Prince's Loan

Parnassah

A story ofRav Shmuel Yehuda Katzenellenbogenהרב שמואל יהודה בן מאיר קאצינעלענבויגען

It is told that the Polish prince Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł, known as "the Orphan," once visited Padua, and Rav Shmuel Yehuda received him with generous hospitality.

Later the prince found himself short of money. He turned to the Rav, who lent him the funds he needed to continue his journey. In return, Rav Shmuel Yehuda asked one thing of him: that he treat the Jews of his country with leniency and protect them against the blood libel, the false accusation of ritual murder.
