The Safe Middle Path
In his commentary on Shir HaShirim, the Alshich calls peshat (the literal explanation) and sod (the mystical interpretation) the two opposite extremes. His own method, allegorical exposition, he declares to be the safe middle between them. According to this commentary, Shir HaShirim is an allegory, a dialogue between Hashem and exiled Israel about the mission of Israel.
