Love Every Jew

Ahavas Yisroel

A teaching ofRav Shmuel Shmelke Horowitz of Nikolsburgהרב שמואל שמלקה בן צבי הירש הורוביץ

For a long time the Maharsham was troubled by a question. As a Kohen, one of his mitzvos was bircas kohanim, which touches on another command: to love your fellow Jew as yourself. How is it possible to love every Yid, when even Dovid HaMelech speaks of evildoers as his enemies? Yet the Zohar HaKadosh states plainly that one who does not love all Yisroel should refrain from saying bircas kohanim. Then he came across the words of Rav Shmelke of Nikolsburg and was put at ease. Rav Shmelke writes that since we are commanded to love every Jew, we can at least love the few good deeds and worthy character traits of a rosho, for surely even a rosho has something good about him. The idea pleased the Maharsham, and from then on he went up to bircas kohanim with a settled conscience and a heart full of love for every Yid.
