A teaching ofRav Yaakov Yisroel Twersky of Cherkasהרב יעקב ישראל בן מרדכי טווערסקי

On the posuk, “And Amalek came and fought with Yisroel in Refidim. Go out and fight tomorrow,” the Tsherkaser taught that Amalek is with us in every place and at all times. His primary weapon against us is “V'yilachem,” which can be read as “Vay, lechem,” woe is the bread. In each generation Amalek challenges our faith in our livelihood by making us feel lack and strain, so that we say, “Woe is our bread.” Therefore Amalek attacks us at Refidim, which hints at rifayon, slacking off with loose behavior. The Torah commands, “Go out and fight,” which can be read as “Tze hilachem,” meaning “Hay lachem,” here is your bread: the bread of Torah study, nehama d'Oraisa. Do not loosen your grip on Torah or relax your diligence. Tighten your grip, increase your diligence, and engage in Torah study without worry about what tomorrow will bring. The worry of tomorrow is exactly what Amalek tried to instill in us. Remember that the same Hashem who helped you today will be with you tomorrow. Therefore, concludes the Tsherkaser, we must delve deep into Torah without tomorrow's worries.
