Torah and Eating Meat

A teaching ofRebbi Yehuda (Judah) ha-Nasiרבי יהודה הנשיא

Rebbi taught, "One who is ignorant of the Torah should not eat meat." The reason is that an ignorant person stands on the same level as the animals, so what gives him the right to eat them? It may be that the suffering Rebbi himself endured for showing no pity to the calf helped him see that eating animals is not a matter to be treated lightly.
