A Community Must Support Itself
A teaching ofRav Yoel Teitelbaumהרב יואל בן חנניה יום טוב טייטלבויםProfile ›
When he found chassidim spending all day in the beis medrash, he told them to find work to support their families, recalling that poverty can draw a man away from his loyalty to his Creator. He held that a community can stand only if it supports itself at the level of the society around it, and that its members should give tzedakah generously and without hesitation.
