Mourning the Shechinah: Tzaddikim and the Beis HaMikdash

Bamidbar 30:2
Moshe spoke to the heads of the tribes of Bnei Yisrael, saying: This is the thing that Hashem has commanded.
11“Moshe spoke to the heads of the tribes …”2 Why does the verse say “the heads of the tribes of Bnei Yisrael,” rashei hamatos, and not “the heads of the congregation”? And what do the words “This is the thing that Hashem has commanded” mean? Surely there is no command to make vows!

In shortWhy “the heads of the matos” and not “the heads of the congregation,” and why call vows, which no one is commanded to make, “commanded”?
2Let us first cite a saying of Chazal: “The passing of tzaddikim is as grievous as the burning of the House of our God.”3 At first glance it is hard to understand how the passing of tzaddikim can be compared at all to the burning of the House of our God. The Beis HaMikdash belonged to the whole community, to each and every Jew, while a tzaddik teaches and inspires only his disciples and those who shelter in his shade. And elsewhere Chazal said that the passing of tzaddikim is harder before the Holy One, blessed be He, than the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash.4
In shortHow can the passing of a tzaddik, who serves only his followers, equal or outweigh the burning of the Beis HaMikdash, which served all Israel?
3We can explain this through a story in the Gemara: “Eliezer Ze'ira was wearing black shoes … The members of the Exilarch's household found him and said to him, ‘Why these shoes?’ He said, ‘Because I am mourning for Yerushalayim.’ They thought it was yuhara, a show of piety beyond his station, and they imprisoned him.” Afterward they discussed halachah with him, saw that he was a great talmid chacham, a Torah scholar, and released him.5 But this needs explaining. Everyone is obligated to mourn for Yerushalayim at all times, as the halachah rules that a person must keep a remembrance of the destruction.6 If so, why were they angry with Eliezer, thinking it was yuhara? And why did he have to prove to them that he was a Torah scholar? Is it only a Torah scholar who must mourn? Surely each and every person is obligated to mourn for Yerushalayim!
In shortWhy was Eliezer Ze'ira jailed for mourning Yerushalayim and freed only as a scholar, when every Jew must mourn for it?
4aIt seems that the answer is this. When the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed, Chazal did institute enactments and laws so that each and every person would mourn for Yerushalayim. Still, there are two kinds of mourning: over what was physical and over what was spiritual. There is the mourning everyone understands: when the Beis HaMikdash stood, the House was in its splendor and full of joy, and now “the glory has been taken from the House of our life.”7 But there is also mourning over the spiritual side. The service of the Kohanim was so lofty, and the resting of the Shechinah within the Beis HaMikdash so great, and all of it was taken from us with the destruction. This is what the Beis HaMikdash truly was, and so the main mourning is over the Shechinah that rested in it.
- From the Yom Tov Musaf prayer. ↩
4bNot everyone grasps this side. Only a truly great Torah scholar, who knows in his heart what the revelation of the Shechinah means, feels the pain of the Shechinah's absence. True, Chazal set practices of mourning for everyone over this as well. But they apply only in the days of Bein HaMetzarim, the Three Weeks of mourning for the Beis HaMikdash, on the fast of Tishah B'Av and at similar times. Mourning beyond this belongs only to those who know and feel what we have lost in the spiritual realm: the revelation of the Shechinah and the levels the Kohanim reached in their service. Such a person may add to the mourning, since he feels the pain and the loss of the destruction deeply. Eliezer Ze'ira was not known to be a great Torah scholar. That is why, when they saw him mourning for the Beis HaMikdash during the rest of the year, beyond what Chazal had enacted, they had to test him: was he a Torah scholar who truly feels the loss of the revelation of the Shechinah? For such a person may mourn more than Chazal instituted.
In shortThe deeper mourning, for the lost Shechinah, is felt only by a great Torah scholar, so extra mourning like Eliezer's had to be tested.
5This also lets us understand why Chazal compared the passing of tzaddikim to the burning of the House of our God. The main mourning is over the exile of the Shechinah. While the tzaddik lives, the Shechinah rests within him; he is a dwelling place for His Shechinah, blessed be He, just like the Beis HaMikdash. As the Alshich and the Shelah teach on “and I will dwell among them”: within each and every one.8 So the passing of such a tzaddik is like the burning of the House of our God: just as the Shechinah departed when the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed, so the Shechinah departs at the passing of tzaddikim.
- Shemos 25:8; Alshich on Shemos 31:13; Shelah, Shaar HaOsiyos, Lev Tov. ↩
In shortA tzaddik is a dwelling for the Shechinah like the Beis HaMikdash, so at his passing, as at the destruction, the Shechinah departs.
6aThis lets us understand the Gemara's words: “Whoever sheds tears over a worthy person, the Holy One, blessed be He, counts them and places them in His treasure-house.”9 What can it mean that He counts the tears and places them in His treasure-house? According to what we have said, though, the main mourning over a tzaddik is over the departure of the Shechinah, as with the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. It follows that one who mourns the passing of tzaddikim is like one who mourns over the Beis HaMikdash.
- Shabbos 105b. ↩
6bNow we can understand why Hashem counts the tears. We know the explanation that the holy sefarim, the Tiferes Shlomo and the Zera Kodesh, give for the words “And rebuild Yerushalayim, the holy city, speedily in our days.”10 Yerushalayim will be built by the power of “our days,” through the days in which we serve Hashem. So the tears we shed over the death of tzaddikim, which are really tears over the departure of the Shechinah, will stand to our credit for the building of the Beis HaMikdash. That is why “whoever sheds tears over a worthy person, the Holy One, blessed be He, counts them and places them in His treasure-house.” When Moshiach comes, speedily, our account will be drawn up in Heaven with these tears, which will be brought out and added to our merits toward the rebuilding. So they must be kept in His treasure-house. And Chazal said “counts” because, we may say, each and every drop joins in to complete the reckoning of our merits for the building of the Beis HaMikdash.
- Tiferes Shlomo, Va'eschanan; Zera Kodesh, Ki Seitzei. ↩
In shortTears over a tzaddik are tears over the departed Shechinah, so Hashem counts and stores each drop toward the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdash.
7This lets us understand the words “the heads of the matos of Bnei Yisrael.” The word matos is related to hatayah, “inclining.” Through the Shechinah resting within them and revealed in them, the tzaddikim incline the hearts of Bnei Yisrael to their Father in Heaven. And this is “what Hashem has commanded”: by this power the tzaddikim bring Bnei Yisrael to do all that Hashem has commanded, in keeping the Torah and the mitzvos.
In shortThrough the Shechinah within them, the tzaddikim “incline” Israel's heart to Hashem, and so bring about “all that Hashem has commanded.”
8In our days, too, we must make a cheshbon hanefesh, a searching account of what we lost with the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. The main loss is that the Shechinah is in exile. As long as we do not feel this, we go from exile to exile, may Hashem have mercy, until we are privileged to recognize that the Shechinah is missing from us. Then Hashem will take pity on us and bring us our redemption. Amen, may it be His will.
In shortWe must take stock: the main loss is the exiled Shechinah, and only when we feel its absence will Hashem take pity and redeem us.
Takeaway
Mourning for the Beis HaMikdash can stay on the surface, a sadness over lost splendor on the fixed days. The deeper loss is the Shechinah that once rested among us and rests within the tzaddikim, so every tear shed over a tzaddik is counted toward the rebuilding. We are asked to make an honest accounting of whether we feel that loss at all, for recognizing it is the beginning of our redemption.
