Praise Meant for His Rebbe

Torah learning

A story ofRav Avrohom Yehuda Leib HaKohen Schwartzהרב אברהם יהודה לייב בן פנחס זעליג שווארץ

At the engagement in Uhjel, the great rabbonim and geonim at the tables sat spellbound as the young illui of Mad delivered his derosha. Afterward, whispers began to circulate that the chiddush and pilpul were so great that they could not possibly be his own. “Surely he heard this from his Rebbe, the Rosh Yeshiva of Verboy,” they said, nodding.

When the whispers reached the chosson, the Kol Arye smiled and said, “They must really like what they are hearing, to attribute it to my Rebbe. In fact my chiddushim must be sound, since if they think they came from the Shaarei Torah, they did not find any mistakes in them. That is all the more reason to rejoice.”
