Finishing What You Begin

Torah learning

A story ofRav Elchonon Bunim Wassermanהרב אלחנן בונים וסרמן

Rav Aharon Kotler once told Rav Elchonon that he had been speaking with the Chofetz Chaim when, in the middle of the conversation, the Chofetz Chaim said, “When you begin a maseches you must always finish it. Do not leave it in the middle.” Rav Aharon later realized that he had done exactly that many times, starting a masechta, learning a little, and leaving it. He asked Rav Elchonon how the Chofetz Chaim could have known.

Rav Elchonon replied that the same thing had happened to him. In the middle of a discussion the Chofetz Chaim had interrupted him to say that once one begins a maseches one must finish it. Both agreed that this was genuine ruach hakodesh.
