The Honeycomb of Meir the Trustworthy

A story ofRav Meir Hagodol of Premishlanהרב מאיר בן יעקב מפרמישלאן

It is told that one day a merchant arrived in Premishlan carrying a honeycomb. He insisted that he would sell it to no one but Meir the trustworthy. Rav Meir was in no rush to cut short his learning, and he asked the merchant to wait until his shiurim were finished, which was not until the end of the day.

That night, when he came back from the Bais Medrash, Rav Meir paid a high price for the honeycomb. His ehrlichkeit would not allow him to pay less, even though he had to borrow money to pay for it.

When the Rebbetzin took the honeycomb apart, she found almost no honey in it. Looking more closely, she discovered that it hid an enormous sum of money. Rav Meir would not benefit from this unexpected find until he had investigated further. Only after he had satisfied himself that it was truly from the hand of Hashem did he keep the money.

Years later his grandson, Rav Meir'l of Premishlan, told this story and added, "Great malochim put the money there, because of his strong middah of bitachon."
