The Cattle Partners
Rav Eliyahu Dahan heard this account himself from an Arab man. The man and a member of his family had gone into the cattle business together. They trusted each other so completely that they never drew up a contract, until the day one of them tried to push the other out of the business. With nothing written or signed, being in the right was of little use to him.
A Jewish neighbor advised him to visit Rav Raphael Pinto. He had little faith, but he was desperate and went. Rav Raphael welcomed him warmly. The man lit a candle and said in simple sincerity: “Rav Pinto, I do not know you, but I want to believe in you. I do not want cattle and I do not want money. But if I am to lose everything, then let my partner, who cheated me so dishonestly, gain nothing either.”
Rav Raphael comforted him as best he could and promised that the tzaddik's miracle would not be long in coming. At the end of that same week the man's mother came in from the village with news: all the cattle were dying. The stable had caught fire, and the animals had been badly harmed by the thick smoke.
From that time on the man visited the tzaddik regularly, and in his own way of prayer he thanked Rav Raphael and Rav Meir Pinto.
