The Rambam's Sefer on the Table

RefuahTorah learning

A story ofRav Mordechai of Neshchizהרב מרדכי בן דוב בער מנעשכיז

Rav Yitzchok of Neshchiz related this about his father, Rav Mordechai. One time the Rambam himself appeared before him and complained that he did not study his sefer, the Yad HaChazaka, also known as the Mishneh Torah.

Rav Mordechai answered that he was very busy. He was preoccupied with communal matters and was flooded with requests from his congregants and other Jews for every kind of blessing and salvation.

The Rambam told him that he should at least keep his sefer on the table at all times. He promised that whenever a sick person came before Rav Mordechai, or someone asked for his berocha to heal the sick, if Rav Mordechai would open the Rambam's sefer and study it, the Rambam would send a refuah and heal the person.

Rav Yitzchok concluded, "And so it was that the Rambam's sefer was always on my father's table."
