The Torn Sefer Torah in Teveria
Torah learning
Rebbi Yossi ben Chalafta, still young, was once having a Torah argument with Rebbi Elazar ben Shamua in a beis knesset in Teveria. In the heat of the debate a sefer Torah was torn.
Rebbi Yossi ben Kisma, who witnessed the event, said, "I would be surprised if this beis knesset does not turn into a house of idolatry." That is exactly what happened.
