Every soul has its own mission

The Arizal explains that a completely new soul must fulfill all 613 mitzvos. A soul that has returned to this world in a gilgul, however, does not need to start over; it comes to complete what it lacked before. This is why each person is drawn to particular mitzvos and faces particular tests: they are the very tikkun his soul came down to accomplish.
