Answering Amen, Yehei Shemei Rabba
TefillahShabbos & Yom TovTorah learning
The Gemara teaches in the name of Rebbi Yehoshua ben Levi that whoever answers Amen, Yehei Shemei Rabba Mevorach with all his strength has seventy years of decrees against him torn up. Rav Heller explains in Ma'adanei Yom Tov that we ask that the Name Yud-Hay become whole through our redemption, and separately that it be blessed. The Tosafos read it as one prayer, may His great Name be blessed. Rashi says the seventy years refers to a decree from one's youth, but Rav Heller believes it refers to a whole lifetime, as the pasuk in Tehillim 90:10 describes. In his Divrei Chamudos he notes the practical difference. By the first reading, one may pause between Rabba and Mevorach but not between Shemei and Rabba. By the second, one may not pause at all, and the Beis Yosef also rules that one should not pause between Olmaya and Yisbarach.
