Love Every Jew
Ahavas Yisroel
As a Kohen, the Maharsham blessed the people in Birkas Kohanim, which touches on the mitzvah to love every Jew. For a long time this troubled him. How can one love every Jew, when even Dovid HaMelech speaks of enemies? Yet the Zohar HaKadosh says that one who does not love all of Yisroel should not recite Birkas Kohanim. He found his answer in the words of Rav Shmelke of Nikolsburg. Since we are commanded to love every Jew, we can love at least the few good deeds and worthy qualities of even a wicked person, for surely everyone has something good in him. This idea pleased the Maharsham, and from then on he went up to bless the people at peace in conscience and with a heart full of love for every Jew.
