A teaching ofRav Yechezkel Sarnaהרב יחזקאל בן יעקב חיים סרנא

In the matter of mitzvos, Reb Yechezkel followed the way of all the talmidim of Reb Yisroel Salanter, for whom, like the Chofetz Chaim, every mitzvah and every prohibition was equally weighty. The Chofetz Chaim's son said of him, “As for my father, all of the mitzvos and all of the prohibitions were the same to him.” Typical of Reb Yechezkel was a question he recorded while in Switzerland for an illness. In modern hospitals the pipes are strong, and drawing water makes a great noise, as does waste water flowing out, and this likely disturbs the sleep of the patients. Which is preferable: to use a lot of water for washing, for reasons of bein odom laMakom (the Gemara says that using much water for washing brings brocho), or to use little, out of consideration of bein odom lechavero? Another of his questions concerned a rosh yeshiva who earns his livelihood from the yeshiva and has very costly medical expenses, yet refrains from accepting private gifts, partly out of regard for the dignity of the yeshiva. Which is preferable: to draw money from the yeshiva's account for his expenses, or to accept private gifts to cover them?
