The Brisker Rov's First Talmid

Torah learning

A story ofRav Shlomo Leib Brevda

At the advice of the Mashgiach, Rav Brevda also went to the Brisker Rov to tell him his chidushei Torah. One time the Brisker Rov told him that he wanted his son, Rav Yosef Dov Ber, to begin giving shiurim, and that he wanted Rav Brevda to be his first talmid. The Brisker Rov first wanted to speak with him, to see whether he was truly worthy of this, and he set an appointment.

When Rav Brevda arrived for the appointment, the Brisker Rov told his son, Rav Refoel, to leave the room and close the door behind him. The Rov sat down opposite Rav Brevda, drew close to him, and told him several things in confidence. After that, the Rov decided that Rav Brevda was worthy of being the first student in his son's yeshiva.
