Everyone can be a beinoni
The Alter Rebbe describes the 'beinoni' – the intermediate person whose heart may still feel temptation, but who never acts on it in deed, speech or thought. Unlike the level of the true tzaddik, which depends on feelings that are not in our control, the beinoni's path depends on choice. Therefore, he writes, every person can at any moment choose to be a beinoni. The mind can always rule over the heart.
