God and Nature

A teaching ofRav Tzvi Hirsch Friedman of Liskaהרב צבי הירש בן אהרן פריעדמאן

The Ach Pri Tevuah points out that the Divine name Elokim and the word hateva, nature, share the same numerical value, 86, and can therefore be equated. Nature is a garment in which Hashem clothes His actions, so that a person will have bechirah, free choice. He may believe that the world is run by nature, or he may recognize Hashem as the Power that rules and guides all of existence. How then can Hashem's presence be recognized in a world that is dressed in nature? By seeing how He deals out justice measure for measure. This is what Yisro understood after hearing of the miracles of the Exodus, when he said that Hashem is greater than all other powers, "because the very thing they plotted came upon them."
