A Happy Broken Heart

TefillahRefuahSimcha

A teaching ofRav Yaakov Yitzchok Rabinowitz of Peshischaהרב יעקב יצחק בן אשר מפשיסחא

The Yid Hakadosh noted that Tehillim (147:3) says Hashem heals the brokenhearted, and asked, why does a broken heart need healing, when a broken heart is a good thing, as it says (Tehillim 34:19), "Hashem is close to the brokenhearted"? He answered that a broken heart is indeed good, but only if it is joined with happiness and not with depression. This is the meaning of the pasuk, "He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their sorrows." Hashem does not take away their brokenheartedness, only the sadness in it. Their healing is to be happy and joyful while being broken-hearted.
