Sent to Reisin
Torah learning
It is told that the Maggid of Mezritch once sent Rav Menachem Mendel to Reisin to teach the people yiras Shomayim and good middos. The Maggid dressed him in his own kaftan, gave him his staff, and sent him on his way. When Rav Menachem Mendel returned, the Maggid asked how he had fared.
He answered, "I found whole hearts and torn clothes, and I exchanged them for broken hearts and whole clothes. Everywhere I went they called me a lamdan and a sage, but I knew the truth about my lowly stature."
"You did well," said the Maggid.
