Chumash and Rashi Every Day

TefillahTorah learning

A story ofRav Yoel Teitelbaumהרב יואל בן חנניה יום טוב טייטלבוים

When Rav Yoel was six years old he was brought to visit Rav Mordechai'leh of Nadvorna. The Rebbe asked him what he was learning in cheder, and the boy answered that he was learning Chumash with Rashi. Rav Mordechai'leh tested him and was pleased to find that he knew it well.

He then told the child to be very diligent in learning Chumash with Rashi every week. He said that he had known several great men who, in their later years, no longer knew where Hashem dwells, because they had not been careful with Chumash and Rashi. He promised the young Rav Yoel that if he kept up this learning week by week, he would rise to very high levels.

Rav Yoel kept these words all his life. Every day after davening, still wearing tallis and tefillin, he learned Chumash with Rashi. Even in his old age, when it was hard and tiring for him, he never gave it up.
