A story ofRav Yoel Teitelbaumהרב יואל בן חנניה יום טוב טייטלבויםProfile ›

Many stories are told of the Rebbe's generosity to people who were not his own followers. A woman who was not dressed in Satmar fashion once came from Latin America, needing money for her son's hospital bills, and left with the entire amount.

Another time a man wept bitterly over his sufferings and walked out with the entire day's collection. Afterwards the Rebbe was told that the man was a fraud. The Rebbe said he was relieved to hear that the man was not in such terrible trouble after all.

The editor of an Israeli newspaper that had slandered and even mocked the Rebbe once sat in his room, sobbing over his daughter's plight. She was engaged but had no money to buy an apartment. The Rebbe gave him a large sum. Someone whispered, “Don't you know who that was?” “Of course I know,” the Rebbe replied. Then, after a moment's hesitation, he called the editor back and gave him even more.
