In the shiur, Rav Pam insisted that a bochur must first know the Gemara, Rashi and Tosafos clearly before he goes deeper into the sugya. He did not like the Gemara to be used as a springboard for exploring the sugya before the plain facts of the text were understood. His own teaching reflected this approach, with simple eloquence and clarity in every shiur.
