The Torah's garments

Torah learning

A teaching ofRebbi Shimon bar Yochaiרבי שמעון בר יוחאי

The Zohar teaches that the stories of the Torah are its outer clothing. Just as a person is more than the garment he wears, the Torah is far more than its narratives; beneath the clothing is a body of mitzvos, and within that body a soul of hidden wisdom. Someone who thinks the Torah is nothing more than tales has missed it entirely. This is why Dovid HaMelech prayed, "Open my eyes, that I may see wonders from Your Torah."
