Education
Children & shidduchimTorah learning
A teaching ofRav Menachem Mendel Schneersonהרב מנחם מנדל בן לוי יצחק שניאורסון
Education that only passes on information is bound to fail. It must serve the nobler purpose of building the student's character, since skills in mathematics, history and science cannot be separated from growth as a responsible member of society. Children raised with a strong awareness of Hashem, who watches over them and asks them to act with sensitivity, honesty, respect and compassion, find it much easier to measure their conduct. A child should know, even before learning to read and write, that there is “an eye that sees, and an ear that hears.” The Rebbe noted that eighty-four percent of America's children attend public schools, and that since a Supreme Court decision of 1962, formal recognition of a Supreme Being in them has been held unconstitutional, so Hashem has in effect been removed from the experience of millions of children.
