The Elderly

A teaching ofRav Menachem Mendel Schneersonהרב מנחם מנדל בן לוי יצחק שניאורסון

Our society too often measures a person's worth by physical strength, which leaves many elderly people feeling useless and contributes to depression. The Torah prefers wisdom to strength and holds the elderly in high esteem, since wisdom comes with age and experience. Their physical strength fades, but the mind grows, which is why they should use their mental faculties and aim for further spiritual growth. The Rebbe advocated establishing institutions of learning for the elderly for this purpose.
